Annie Duryea Leslie
(April 8, 1923 - April 14, 2014)

Annie Duryea Leslie, of Whiteriver, AZ went to be with her Heavenly Father peacefully after 91 years here on earth. She made this passage on April 14, 2014 in Mesa, AZ.

Annie was a wonderful, loving, full blooded White Mountain Apache lady, born in Cibecue to Louis and Mae Duryea. Her traditional clan was the Butterfly Clan. She grew up most of her young life in Cibecue. When the time came she attended the Theodore Roosevelt School, where she completed her education of nine years. She married, and settled down in various places, where employments were available.

She raised her family with various jobs, such as motel housekeeping, restaurant setting, even held a job as a police matron for the White Mountain Apache Police Department. Her hobbies include making traditional camp dresses, cradleboards and sewing quilts. She loved fishing at Hawley Lake with her family often camping out near the lake. Harvesting acorns, pinions, corn, squaw berries was very important to her, as she said that type of food was important as the hard times were coming.

She loved the church teachings of the Lord, but kept her traditional song and prayer close to her heart. She was honored to be a traditional Godmother with one Goddaughter. With the hard work being an Apache woman in the old days she became very strong and her strength carried her well into the age of 91. She left her earthly spirit and became alive, happy, healthy and rejoicing in meeting her Father in Heaven very peacefully. We will miss her dearly but thank her for being in our lives, as a mother of four generations, a sister and aunt. May she rest in Peace.

Annie is survived by her children Orin D. Nashio, Yolanda Baha-Nashio, Queenie Nashio and one sister Dora Duryea Malone.

She is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Mae Duryea, son Walter Nashio Sr. and by her sister Verneda Duryea Zahgotah.

A two night wake will be held in her honor on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 10:00 AM at 3305 N. Penrod Road (North of Rainbow City) in Whiteriver, AZ. Funeral services will follow on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 10:00 AM at the Open Bible Lutheran Church in Whiteriver.

Interment will be at the Whiteriver Cemetery.
