Donald Richard Metzler passed away peacefully on March 15, 2008. He was born in Greensburg, Pa., in 1924, the 10th child of John Harris Metzler and Almeda Metzler.

He went through school in Greensburg and was on the wrestling team in high school (he was not as good as his older brother John, who was a Pennsylvania state champion in 1938).

He enlisted in the armed forces in 1942 and was a decorated 3rd Army combat veteran with a Purple Heart.

Most of his career was in the mining industry. He went from the coal mines of Pennsylvania and West Virginia to the mine and oil fields of the western United States and South America. He went from underground miner to mining company president.

He attended Stanford University and Oregon State, and he graduated from Penn State.

He was a professional engineer, registered geologist and certified blaster.

He was married to Betty Metzler for 54 years. They met in Venezuela, where Donald was representative for a mine and oil field supply company.

He is survived by his wife Betty; son Donald of DeBeque, Colo.; daughter Lynn Brunet of Blythe, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Donations will be accepted in Donald’s name to Hospice of the Valley.

He was the patriarch of the Metzler family for more than 50 years and dearly loved.
