Ethel G. Kirby of Wickenburg died Dec. 7 in Wickenburg. She was 100 years of age.

Mrs. Kirby was born Nov. 26, 1896 in Logan County, Okla. She had lived in Arizona for the past 24 years, coming from Elizabeth Lake, Calif.

Mrs. Kirby's father made the run into Oklahoma Territory in April of 1889. They were called "89'ers." She was born before Oklahoma was a state and was the sixth child in the family. Mrs. Kirby was baptized in 1935. She is a descendant (through her mother) of one of the first Dutch (Holland) settlers of New York City, Trinity Church stands on that property today. She also taught Sunday School in Enid, Okla., and received a teacher's certificate from Central State Teachers College in Oklahoma.

Mrs. Kirby was a legal secretary in Enid, Okla. She also was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Enid for 25 years. Mrs. Kirby was a member of the Auxiliary of Railroad Engineers' Wives, Madonna Garden Club, Enid Gem and Mineral Society and several other organizations. She also enjoyed oil painting and china painting.

Survivors include her daughter Maxine Coffin Failing of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren Jay C. Failing of Kamuela, Hawaii, and Janice Failing Elizondo of Las Vegas; six great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Kirby was preceded in death by her husband Clarence in 1959; son Gerald Coffin of Wickenburg and Congress in 1992; grandchild Michael E. Failing of Mission Viejo, Calif., in 1994; and seven sisters and brothers.

Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 11) at Frey Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. Pastor Ed Wessling will officiate.

Frey Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wickenburg handled all the arrangements.
