William “Bill” Thomas Anderson.

In the early morning of July 4th, 2014, Bill passed away peacefully in his sleep at Oro Valley Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. In his final days, Bill was surrounded by his family and comforted by his wife. He was 83 years old.

Bill was born on September, 12th, 1930, in the town of North Adams in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He was the first of four sons born to William James Anderson and Mary (Michaels) Anderson.

Bill graduated from Drury High School in North Adams, Massachusetts in 1947 and served in the United States Navy for four years, on the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Des Moines. Upon being honorably discharged, Bill was employed by General Electric as a draftsman for 15 years in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Bill retired from IBM after 23 years as an electrical engineer. During his tenure, he worked as part of the engineering team who designed the computer O-Ring for the Apollo Space Program. While at IBM, Bill lived in Alabama, New York and California.

Bill and his wife, Marlene, moved to Oro Valley, Arizona in 1990. Bill was a volunteer member of the Sun City Posse for 22 years and volunteered at the Oro Valley Police Department for 15 years. He held Board positions on both organizations. In 2007, Bill was named Volunteer of the Year by the Oro Valley Police Department.

Bill was a skilled wood-worker, photographer and marksman and enjoyed staying busy. He was a self-taught computer geek and always willing to help out friends and neighbors with tech related issues.

Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Francis “Bud” Anderson (Shirley) of Williamstown, Massachusetts and his parents, William and Mary Anderson of North Adams, Massachusetts.

Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marlene (DeVecchi) Anderson, of Barre, Vermont , brothers Donald Anderson (Nicky) of Anza, California and Bernard Anderson (Barbara) of Sun City West, Arizona, daughter Mary Rosswurm (Patrick) of Zionsville, Indiana and grand-children Ryan Anderson of Beverly, Massachusetts and Bradley Anderson of Zionsville, Indiana.

A private memorial service for the family will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Oro Valley Police Department, 11000 N. La Canada Drive, Oro Valley, AZ 85737.

The family wishes to thank the ICU nursing staff at Oro Valley Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion over the last several months.
