| San Pedro Valley News-Sun (Benson, AZ) - Wednesday, December 24, 2003 Deceased Name: Dr. Luis Eduardo Vega: Cancer claims Dr. Vega CHRIS DABOVICH News-Sun Dr. Luis Eduardo Vega, a noted pathologist and nature lover who held a deep fondness for the Benson area died last week due to complications from brain cancer. He was 64. Vega, of Tucson, established the Vega-Bray Observatory in 1991 and Skywatcher's Inn bed and breakfast on Benson's southeast side. Vega died Tuesday with his family at his side after a two-year battle with brain cancer, said his son, Eduardo Robert Vega. "My father was a very generous and warm person and he touched a lot of people through his warmth and generosity," said Eduardo. "He was always committed to helping anyone who needed help." Vega hailed from the Dominican Republic and co-founded Tucson Pathology Associates along with the bed and breakfast and observatory located on a knoll along the San Pedro River Valley. "My parents fell in love with the property and our original intention was to establish an observatory and working farm," said Eduardo. "My father had a great love for nature and the stars and liked what Benson had to offer in that regard." Longtime family friend Kathleen Burch concurred. "Anything that Dr. Vega had, he shared. Even during his illness, he was always thinking of his family and friends," said Burch, secretary at Skywatcher's Inn. Dr. Vega studied in Spain and completed his residency in Cleveland, Ohio. He was said to have a great interest in not only the galaxy but the ocean as well. He was an accomplished scuba diver and also held a deep passion for his family and community. He is survived by wife, Patricia, daughters, Jennifer Alexandra Vega, Dr. Maria Teresa Robinson, both of Tucson, Rebecca Lisette Vega of Monterey, Calif., and son Eduardo Robert Vega of Philadelphia. Funeral services were held Friday in Tucson. "My dad was a man of many interests," said Eduardo, noting the family is overwhelmed by the number of well wishers. |
