Man dies in during domestic quarrel Sunday night at squatter’s Flat. A common-law husband and wife quarrel turned deadly Sunday night in the "squatter's flat" area at the end of the pavement of Constellation Road just inside the Yavapai County line.

According to reports from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Department, Robert Wengert, 46, was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix late Sunday following the incident. Spokes person Laurie Hadley of the 4 YCSO in Prescott said Wengert was shot once and possibly twice with a small caliber handgun by his wife, Phyllis Emanuel, 54.

According to a statement given to deputies at the scene, Emanuel said the couple had been drinking and got into an argument which escalated to the point that her husband came at her with a knife. Emanuel told deputies she shot Wengert in self-defense.

No charges have been filed against Emanuel, Hadley said. An autopsy and further investigation will determine if charges will be brought, she said.

Both Emanuel and Wengert were listed by Yavapai County authorities as transients, living in a fifth-wheel trailer in the area northeast of Wickenburg where the shooting occurred. Their last known permanent address was in Congress authorities said.
