Albert Serrano Jr., patriarch of one of Gilbert’s oldest and most well known families, has died at the age of 86.

Albert Jr. was the oldest son of Albert Sr. and Delores Serrano, who moved to Chandler in 1919 and raised six children, Carmen, Albert Jr., Carrie, Ernie, Rudy and Lolly.

The Serrano family has a rich history in Arizona with prominent family businesses marking the landscape throughout the years. Albert Jr. had Serrano’s department store in downtown Gilbert until 1959. It was established in 1923 by his family.

He was one of the original owners in White Mountain Country Club in 1959 and started a family tradition in the White Mountains, spending time with family in summers in Pinetop.

After 1959, he started Maverick Western Wear stores in Chandler, Casa Grande and Tempe.

Albert Jr. was dearly loved. He was described as a kind, modest and sweet man who loved his family, friends and his community. He was also a veteran serving in the U.S. Army.

Albert Jr. and Rosemarie made their home in Gilbert, saying it was a great place to raise their children.

He also loved his time in the White Mountains creating lasting memories with family and friends, fishing, hunting and enjoying other outdoor activities.

Albert is survived by his wife, Rosemarie; their seven children, Patricia (Doug) Mapson, Elizabeth (Dwight) Echeverria, Pamela (Rick) Furrow, Gloria Hanley, Paul Serrano, Carlotta Weir (Charles) and Lawrence Serrano (Maureen); 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his younger brother, Rudy Serrano (Colleen) of Chandler.

Funeral services will be held Friday (today) at St. Steven’s Catholic Church in Sun Lakes, 24827 S. Dobson Road, Sun Lakes, AZ 85248.

Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m.. Military honors will follow Mass, with a reception immediately following in the church hall. All friends and family are welcome.

The internment of Albert Serrano Jr. will be immediately following a Mass at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pinetop. Internment will be held at 12:15 p.m. by Father Dan at Angel’s Rest Columbarium, which is adjacent to St. Mary’s and located at 1915 Penrod Lane.

A reception will follow at the White Mountain Country Club summer home of Dr. Paul Serrano, 2950 Antelope Trail in Pinetop. Friends and family are welcome.
