The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ February 26, 1997 Sarah "Marie" Abernathey of Congress, died Feb. 21 in Congress. She was 79. Mrs. Abernathey was born June 1, 1917 in Arthur, Neb. She had lived in Arizona for the past 44 years. Mrs. Abernathey moved to Arizona from Nebraska in 1953. She was a mem¬ber of the First Baptist Church of Congress. Mrs. Abernathey started a cook shack for the miners at the Grand Canyon in 1956, and then started cooking at a cafe at the Grand Canyon. From 1970 until 1982, she owned and operated the 71 Cafe in Congress. She helped start the senior center in Congress, and home delivered meals. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Patricia Garvin of Kennesaw, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law Sheila and Morlan Wiman of Con¬gress; stepdaughter and husband Ruth and Ralph Deffenbaugh of Chapala, Mexico; stepsons and wives Clyde and Evelyn Abernathey of Phoenix, Gayle and Marion Abernathey of Eugene, Ore., and Jack and Leila Abernathey of Here¬ford; brother and sister-in-law Edgar and Betty McMullen of Grand Island, Neb.; sister and brother-in-law Edith and Preston Stiles of Anaheim, Calif.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services were Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Brown's Wickenburg Funeral Home. The Rev. Carl Wiman, her grandson, officiated. Burial was in the Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery.
