Vivianita (Vivian) V. Garcia

In loving memory of “our” mother, Vivianita (Vivian) V. Garcia. Grandmother, sister, aunt and “Nina,” who at the age of 83 went to “dance with Jesus” Sept. 28, 2014, at the home of her daughter, Janet Shurwin in Goodyear, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born June 2, 1931, in Mangas, N.M., to Jose and Albina Vallejos.

Vivian resided in and called St. Johns her home for most of her life. She married Tony P. Garcia June 16, 1951, and they had eight children.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 23, 1992, and their youngest child and only son, Tony Garcia Jr., on April 9, 1997, her parents Jose and Albina Vallejos, brother Gilbert Vallejos and sister Lisa Vallejos.

Vivian had many passions in life one in particular was her great talent for cooking. She could prepare all types of food but her Mexican-American food was absolutely the best. She operated a restaurant called “The Hiway Café,” known as “El Camino” for a time, worked as a cook at “The Trailriders Inn” and was well known for the food stand she operated at the Apache County fair and horse races for many years.

Other passions included the soap opera The Young and the Restless. “We can hear our father teasingly asking her, who you putting the lip sticky on for? Victor Newman?”

She also enjoyed reading, quilting and the music and songs of George Strait, Garth Brooks and Ramon Ayala, to mention a few.

She also loved and enjoyed dancing and going to “Mickey’s” to socialize and dance with her many friends who affectionately called her “Miss Viv” and Carolyn Norton, who Vivian spoke of often and fondly and considered her a true close friend.

She is survived by her brothers, Nick Vallejos, Ismael Vallejos, Robert (Eva) Vallejos, Melcor “Cody” (Sinfer) Vallejos and George (Tham)Vallejos; sisters Mildred Padilla, Susan Varela (who was affectionately called “other sister”) and Kelly Vallejos; and numerous nieces and nephews.

“We, the children, daughters Katherine Rivera, Ida “Becky” Ruiz, Patricia Martin, Janet Shurwin, Cynthia Croskey, Carol Garcia and brother Tony Garcia Jr. (deceased) lovingly give to our parent’s legacy 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren with a third on the way, to carry on their bloodline for generations to come. Daughter Stella J. Garcia lovingly includes her many beloved pet ‘family members.’”

Memorial services will be held Monday, Oct. 27, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, beginning with rosary at 10 a.m. Mass will follow with interment in St. Johns Catholic cemetery. Following her interment, a celebration of Vivian’s life will be held in Barth’s Hall.

“We would like to express our sincere heartfelt appreciation for all of your prayers and support during this difficult time of the loss of our mother.”
