Victor Lee Landreth

Vic Landreth, 72, died of lung cancer, Oct. 21, in his home at Top of the World near Miami. A resident of the area for more than 15 years, he was a former woodworker who built fine furniture for such notables as Alice Cooper.

He was born in Nyssa, OR, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 8, 1941, to Edna (Warren) and Lloyd Landreth, Jr. He grew up in Nyssa and then Madras, OR, where he lived on the family farm.

He graduated from high school in Gresham, OR, in 1960, where he was on the wrestling team, in the U.S. Naval Reserve and enjoyed wood shop. He joined the U.S. Navy and went to Signal School in San Diego, serving on the USS Ranger in China, Japan, the Philippines and Okinawa. Following his discharge he worked in a lumber yard in Portland, OR, and then opened his own lumber yard with a friend.

He married Suzanne Haley in 1968 in Portland. The family moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he first worked in construction and then opened his own woodworking shop. They had two children. In his spare time, he restored a 1967 Porsche 911 from boxes of parts in his garage. In 1985 the family moved to Arizona, settling in the Mesa area where he opened another woodworking shop.

After his divorce about 15 years ago, he moved to Superior, AZ, where he was a familiar figure at the side of the road with his dog, Deke. He then made his home at Top of The World where he enjoyed tinkering, collecting rocks, selling car parts, motorcycling, wandering the desert and sailing on Lake Roosevelt in a small sail boat.

He enjoyed a host of friends in the area who helped to care for him when he decided against a second round of chemotherapy for his lung cancer. At his request, a friend took him deep sea fishing in Los Angeles a few weeks before his death. He had a dry wit, joking in his terminal illness that he quit wearing seat belts and his helmet.

He died in his home as he wished. His children, Brandi (BK) Landreth VanEtten, Chicago, IL, and Casey Landreth, Mesa, were with him. He is also survived by son-in-law John VanEtten, Chicago; daughter-in-law Danielle Landreth, Mesa; two grandchildren, Taylor and Easton of Mesa; sister, Sharon Nesbit, Troutdale, OR; nieces and nephews, and his friend, Tammie Melton of Globe.

The family suggests donations to Copper Communities Hospice, www.coppercommunitieshospice.com, with special thanks to Mary and Dennis.

Lamont Funeral Chapel, Globe, is in charge of arrangements.

A spreading of ashes and remembrance will be held at a later date.
