Burke, Beverly F., Sr.

Mass of Requiem for Beverly F. Burke, 71, a pioneer Arizona druggist who died yesterday, August 16, 1967, in St. Joseph's Hospital, will be sung in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. 4715 N. Central.

Mr. Burke was born in Prescott where his father built the Burke Hotel, now the St. Michael Hotel. He started his career in pharmacy in Prescott and came to Phoenix in 1923 to manage the Owl Drug Store. In 1963 Mr. Burke was named Arizona's outstanding retail druggist by the American Druggist magazine. He was a past president of the State board of Pharmacy and an honorary member of a pharmacy college fraternity at the University of Arizona. Mr. Burke, 1808 N. 11th St., became a partner in the Dorsey-Burke Drug Store in 1925 and opened his own store the same year at Fourth St and Van Buren where he operated it until 1948. He then opened a store in the Medical Center, 1313 N. 2nd St. and later opened one in the Orthopedic Clinic, 2626 N. 3rd St.

He was a member of the Elks, Arizona Club, Phoenix Country Club, Knights of Columbus and was a Phoenix Rotary Club member since 1934.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; two sons, James M. and Beverly, Jr., all of Phoenix; a daughter, Carolyn Oliver of Tucson, and 11 grandchildren.

Graveside services Saturday in St. Francis Cemetery. Friends may call in Whitney and Murphy Funeral Home. The family suggests contributions to the Sisters of Mercy of St. Joseph's Hospital.
