Robert T. “Bob” Doan Sr., 81, of Lakeside died Nov. 13, 2014, at Rim Country Health in Payson, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was in a very caring environment surrounded by family and friends.

Born July 1, 1933, in Elmira, N.Y., Bob was the son of the late Roscoe and Esther Doan. He was the husband of Helen Doan, his wife of 62 years.

Raised in Presho, N.Y., Bob moved to Chandler in 1949. After graduating from Chandler High School in 1951, he moved back to New York where he married his childhood sweetheart, Helen.

After the birth of their second child in 1954, they moved to Sun Valley, Calif., where Bob became superintendent of Santa Fe Trailer Company. While in California, Bob and Helen welcomed two more children to their growing family.

In 1960, the family moved to Lakeside, where Bob owned and operated his own construction company and co-owned a glass company for many years. During this time, Bob and Helen were blessed with the birth of their twins.

Bob was well known for his skill in construction, in particular the building of free-standing circular stairways. He loved flying and held a private pilot’s license for many years. A lifetime member of the White Mountain Sheriff’s Posse, Bob served as captain in 1980 and 1981. He was an avid horseman and loved the outdoors, including fishing, camping and hunting. He was a longtime member and instructor for the NRA.

After semi-retiring, Bob and Helen split their year, spending summers in Lakeside with family and many long-time friends, and winters in Tonto Basin, where he enjoyed the fishing and made many great new friends.

Bob is survived by his wife, Helen; children Robert T. (Toni) Doan Jr. of Union Bridge, Md.; Lois (Fred) Welsch of Phoenix; Don (Pam) Doan of Houston, Texas; Sandi (Christopher) Kengla of Lakeside and Kris (Paul) Doan of Fallbrook, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and their spouses, Natasha, Stacie, Robert III, Elizabeth (Monzille), Jonathan (Patricia), Casey, Andrew (Jen), Brian (Megan), Barney, Katie (Kyle), Tiffany (Gregory) and Brandon; brothers Jack (Patricia) Doan of Cottonwood, Jim (Sheryl) Doan of Lakeside and Dal (Pat) Doan of Apache Junction; niece Joy Wilson of Phoenix; nephew Ray Smith of Chandler; six great-grandchildren, Noah, Chase, Jordan, Ja`wan, Cadence and Camden; and many other beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by son Keith Doan of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

A celebration of his life will be held on a date yet to be determined.

Funeral and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials for Bob be sent to White Mountain Sheriff’s Posse, P.O. Box 830 Pinetop, AZ 85935 or Alzheimer’s Association.

“Biggest heart in a man that there ever was.”
