Armond (Don) Alarie

Armond "Don" Alarie, age 85, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, passed away Nov. 20, 2014, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs.

Don was born Jan. 27, 1929, at a farm home near Wessington, South Dakota. He attended a rural school in Hand County and graduated from Huron High School in May 1946. Don then enlisted in the Army and was sent to Italy with the Army of Occupation at the end of WWII. After about a year he returned to the United States and worked in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., for the balance of his enlistment. Don returned to South Dakota and became a freshman at SDSU in the fall of 1949. He received an associate's degree in chemistry after two years.

On Aug. 12, 1951, Don married W. Billie Swain in Miller, South Dakota. The marriage has lasted for over 63 years. Don was the past Master of the Wessington Masonic Lodge, a member of the United Church of Christ in Yankton, South Dakota, Huron, South Dakota and Prescott, Arizona.

Don is survived by his wife, Dr. Billie Alarie of Hot Springs; daughter Kim Alarie of Rapid City, South Dakota; son Casey Alarie of Rapid City; and the father of the late son Kent Alarie; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Committal services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, South Dakota.
