Anna Sophia Henkel
September 1, 1918 - November 20, 2014

Anna Sophia Kunstler Patzer Henkel was born on September 1, 1918 in Pomarania, Germany to Heinrich Kunstler and Amalie Schonmeier Kunstler and she peacefully entered into rest on November 20, 2014 in Safford, Arizona. She was the oldest of 6 children.

On February 24, 1942 she married her first husband, Edgar Patzer. He was sent into battle in World War 2 and was killed in action in Wielki, Poland two months before their daughter Renate was born.

In 1962, Renate married an American Soldier, Sonny Ely, and soon moved to the United States. In 1972, she reconnected with Eduard Henkel, an old school friend of hers and her first husbands who had recently been widowed. They became inseparable and often traveled to Arizona to visit her daughter and grandchildren. On June 11, 1980 she married Eddie and they were married until he passed away on May 22, 1994.

In January 1995, Renate went to Germany and moved her Mother to Arizona, where she would live the remainder of her life. During her life she was blessed with a loving family that included her daughter, grandchildren, great grandchildren and she was expecting her first great great grandchild in January 2015.

Over the years of living in Arizona she also became "Omi" to so many other family friends. She never knew a stranger and even though her English was not the best she communicated her love for all those who knew her. She loved to fix German meals for her family and bake delicious German cakes and cookies. She was the seamstress, the baker and she loved her garden.

She was a strong woman, who even at 96 was still taking care of herself and her family. She will truly be missed by all those who knew her and her warm smile.

She is survived by her daughter Renate Ely, her grandchildren, Allen (Paula) Bingham, Sean (Tammy) Ely, Michele (Shawn) Haralson, Frank (Susie) Matzerath, Carlos ( Lucy) Leon, her Great-Grandchildren, Daniel Bingham, Jon Bingham, Chase Bingham, Samantha Sturges, Justin Ely, Ryan Haralson, Whitney Haralson, Sydney Haralson, Eve Matzerath, Leon Matzerath, Kim Matzerath, Loreto Leon, Francisco Leon. A Great Great Grandchild due in January 2015, her Sister, Grete Kirchner of Germany and many nieces and nephews and other close family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents Heinrich and Amalie Kunstler, her brothers Fritz Kunstler, Heinrich Kunstler, Karl Kunstler and her sister Ruth Fiedler, her first husband Edgar Patzer, her second husband, Eduard Henkel, and her beloved son-in-law, Sonny Ely.

A Memorial service for Anna will be held on Saturday, 6, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Safford.
