ANGELIS,
George James
The Arizona Republic 8/16/2005.
George James Angelis always contended that he was practically the
luckiest fellow in the world. Born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1923 to parents
of Greek descent, he grew up always dreaming of immigration to the
United States. Following graduation from Greek School, French School and
attending the American University of Cairo and the interruption of WW
II, this dream became a reality. With the traditional tramp steamer
departure from Port Said, Egypt, and never expecting to return, he
became an instant New Yorker.
He found employment at Pan American World Airways. He started as a Pan
Am baggage handler and worked his way up to becoming the Manager of the
largest Pan Am ticket office in the world located on Fifth Avenue. From
there he returned to Egypt as Pan Am's Director for Egypt and before he
left there he had expanded the territory to the Sudan, Ethiopia, and
Somaliland.
He married the former Kathryn Thomas of Omaha, Nebraska.
Briefly, after retirement, George enjoyed the Defense Division of FMC
Corporation where he traveled the Middle East, including Libya.
George is survived by his wife Katey Angelis, sister-in-law Margaret
Devenport, a sister and brother-in-law Mary and Nicolas Fassolas of Sao
Paulo, Brazil, and many nephews and nieces from California and Arizona
to Brazil, Egypt, Cyprus and Greece.
Family and friends shared memories of George at the Whitney & Murphy
Funeral Home, 4800 E Indian School Rd on August 23, 2005. A Greek
Orthodox Memorial Service was held in Athens, Greece on Thursday,
September 15th.
