Eldon H. Strode, a longtime resident, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at his home in Wickenburg. He was 84. Mr. Strode was born July 21, 1917, in Fulton County, Ill., to Marvin and Delma Strode. He grew up on a farm near Vermont, Ill.

He was graduated from Vermont High School in 1935. They moved to Colorado in February 1945 where he worked on a ranch near Silt. In the spring of 1952, the family moved to Glenwood Springs, Colo. For years Mr. Strode was a rancher and farmer on the Rose Ranch near Glenwood.

In 1968 he joined Morrison-Knudson Co., handling freight operations for the Mid-Continent Resources coal mines near Redstone, Colo.
After retiring in 1981, he and his wife moved to Wickenburg.

For many years, Mr. Strode was active in Glenwood Springs bowling leagues. He also played in area town team basketball leagues and softball leagues.

Mr. Strode was an avid sports fan and longtime backer of the Glenwood Springs High School boosters. For more than 20 years, he was a member of the chain crew for the Glenwood Springs football team.

He also was active in Colorado Cattlemen’s Association and the Holy Cross Cattlemen’s Association.

He is survived by his wife Dorla of Wickenburg, son Richard Strode (Lisa) of Phoenix, daughter Dixie McClenahan (Bill Beerman) and son Dale Eldon Strode, both of Glenwood Springs; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Strode also is survived by sisters Wilma Worsdell of Louisiana, Mo., Wandalee Shields (Willard) of Vermont, Ill., brothers Donald Strode (Mary Ellen) of Dunlap, Ill., Bernard Strode (Janis) of Mexico, Mo., and Max Strode (Shirley) of Bradford, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dayton Strode and sister Irene Purdy.

A celebration of the life of Eldon Strode was held on Monday, Oct. 15, at the clubhouse at WestPark in Wickenburg, where he was active in neighborhood and community affairs.
