The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona December 12, 2001, p. A15 Delbert "Papa" Kirby of Wickenburg, died Dec. 6, 2001. He was 90. Mr. Kirby was born Aug. 11, 1911 in Millerstown, Texas. He was the owner of the Wickenburg Mining Supply for over 40 years, from the mid-1930s through the 1970s. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Bellemont, Ariz. from May to December 1933. "Papa" Kirby settled in Wickenburg in 1935. He married Alvy Eleanor Davis in Wickenburg at Ruby and Pat's home on June 5, 1937. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Seaman 1st Class. He was a past Commander of the Wickenburg American Legion. He served the Wickenburg community as Mayor of Wickenburg, as a member of the volunteer fire department for more than 20 years, as Town Manager, as a member of the Town Council, a member of the Wickenburg School District Board of Education, a member of the Desert Caballeros Western Museum board, and as director of the town's recreation program. Survivors include his wife, Alvy "Nannie" Eleanor Davis Kirby; daughters Arelene Lizarraga and Pauline Stokes; sisters Ova Greenage, Violet Prosise; brother Marvin "Hoot" Kirby; grandchildren Dwayne Hill, Vanessa Lizarraga, Ranae Hill Byers and Joe Lizarraga; and great-grandchildren Nikki Byers, Bucky Hill, Shaina Byers, Devin Sutter and Joey Lizarraga. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Kirby, and brothers Alfred, Clifford, Vivian "Pistol" and Eldon Kirby. Services were Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the Wickenburg Funeral Home. Burial followed at the Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery. All arrangements were by the Wickenburg Funeral Home. See Also: Find a Grave |
