Libor Garcia was born Nov. 1, 1934, in Concho. There are few, if any, who could walk in his shoes and accomplish as much as a man, family member, husband, father, son, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, friend and religious example of how to live in our sometimes evil world. All of this is possible with his faithful and committed wife of over half a century.

In 1955 he married Tillie, the love of his life. Together, they raised 13 children who will carry the best parts of him forward. Libor brought up six men who are hard-working, self-reliant and can make anyone laugh. He gave the world seven women who give unflinchingly, love stubbornly and place their families above all else.

He left behind 33 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren who got to wait for a breakfast of canary eyebrows on toast while sitting on Tata’s lap before heading outside to enjoy the land and lifestyle he cultivated in Concho.

Libor loved raising pigs and reveled in watching them wallow in the mud. He was passionate about horses and even rode to visit Tillie when they were first dating. He thrived in his work on the ranch, milking cows and irrigating the land. His favorite part of spring was plowing the land and planting a huge garden.

He was the “Chili King” of Concho, and people would come from several surrounding states to get his prized chili.

Libor retired after 21 years with the Apache County Sheriff’s Department and went on to be adored by students at Concho Elementary for 10 years.

Libor is survived by his wife, Tillie Garcia; sons Albert (Kelly) of Concho, Leo of Las Vegas, Nev., Dominic (Mary) of Flagstaff, Paul (Mary) of Groton, Maine and Greg (Michelle) of Concho; daughters Stella (Dennis) of Tucson, Toni (Mike) of Greer, Helen (Rick) of Glendale, Melissa (Shawn) of Lakeside, Dorothy (Rakesh) of Lakeside, Dolores (Albert) of Sparks, Nev., and Regina of Concho; sister Saferina (David) McMillan of Concho; brother-in-law Bill Mewhinney of Cottonwood; 33 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lorenzo Garcia and Sofia Garcia, son Elecio Garcia, brothers Ted, Frank and Elecio Garcia, and sister Pauline Mewhinney.

Libor was remembered with a rosary and viewing Feb. 27 and funeral Mass Feb. 28. Both services were held at San Rafael Catholic Church, where Libor could be found every Sunday practicing his unyielding faith.
