Howard A. Durst, age 76, slipped the surly bonds of earth on Feb. 7, 2005, at the VA Hospital in Prescott, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on May 8, 1928.

Howard was a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps. Upon receiving his honorable discharges, he relocated to Phoenix, where he started his 34-year career with the Salt River Project. During this time, he also met his future wife, Audrey Brown, and they had two sons, Thomas and Richard.

His love of life (besides his wife and children) was being an accomplished private pilot, owning two aircraft, and a 30-plus-year pilot in the Civil Air Patrol. Howard also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and just being outdoors. He was a Mason and a Scout Master in the Boy Scouts of America.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and son, Tom.

Howard is survived by his wife, Audrey; son, Rick; daughter-in-law, Stella; brother-in-law, Harold Brown; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at the Chino Valley Community Church, 1969 North Highway 89, in Chino Valley.
