| Camp Verde Bugle, Camp Verde, Arizona Saturday, April 11, 2009 M. Elaine Shankland, 90, died April 10, 2009 in Prescott. She was born on Feb. 5, 1919 in St. Helens, Ore., to Vilas and Mildred Shepard. Elaine grew up and went to school in Clatskanie, Ore. She attend cosmetology school in Oregon, became a beautician for 48 years in three states. She had a love of gardening and animals and was a support of the humane society. She was a member of the Clark County Saddle Club in Vancouver, Wash., for 25 years, riding with the women's drill team. She was a founding member of the Verde Valley Roverettes Women's drill team. She was also a 4-H leader for many years. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Jon. She is survived by her three children; son Darryl "Bud" Shankland of Walla Walla, Wash.; Daughters, Jorga Stark of Woodland, Wash., and Mella Dee Wagner of Chino Valley; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Private family services are planned. Donations in her memory maybe made to Verde Valley Humane Society.
