Calvin August Goetteman, born November 7, 1918, in Minden Township, Benton County, Minnesota, died in Globe, Ariz. on April 8, 2015, where he had been a resident since August 2007. Calvin married Jeanette Bolinski on July 1, 1942 at Zion Lutheran Church in Abilene, Texas. The union was blessed with four children.

Cal served in the U.S. Army from 1942 through 1945 and was honorably discharged with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He retired from the Veterans Administration, St. Cloud, Minnesota in 1971.

He lived in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota for 42 years, before moving to Beaver Lake, Kimball, Minnesota and living there for 12 years. He lived in Tucson, Ariz. for 20 years and moved to Cedar Key, Florida in 1997. He moved to Ormond Beach, Florida in 1999 with a final move to Globe, Ariz. in 2007.

During our lifetime we have been very fortunate to travel and live in many places. We have been in every state west of the Mississippi, except Alaska. Our square dance group flew to Hawaii, where we stayed and danced on the four main Islands, over a period of 15 days. We have been in every state east of the Mississippi except the most Northeastern corridor states. We have been in part of Canada, north of Minnesota and North Dakota. We visited Mexico many times.

We traveled to the Mid-East and Europe in 1980. We flew from Tucson to New York, then to Paris- destination Cairo, Egypt. We enjoyed a Nile Cruise, from Karnack to Abu Simbel. Then on to Saudi Arabia, where our oldest son, Gary, worked for 4 years.

On to Jordan and Isreal, where we visited the many sites of Jesus’ time. On to Morocco, Greece and Italy. In Rome we were in the audience on St. Peter’s Square where the Pope spoke and gave a Blessing. We saw the Sistine Chapel, Catacombs and were on every canal in Venice. Saw the Leaning Tower of Piza. On to Spain, Portugal (bought sweaters for the boys), France, Monaco (put a nickel in the slot machine).

The Blue Danube and Vienna Opera House in Austria. On to Germany and Belgium. We flew home from London, a 12 1/2 hour trip to Los Angeles. We were gone a little more than two months, visiting 15 countries.

Until health concerns prevented it, he was an active member in all eight Lutheran churches he attended. Currently, he is a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Globe-Miami, Ariz.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; sons, Gary of Miami, Ariz., Bruce (Joan) of Carver, Minnesota and Allan (Mary) of Flagler Beach, Florida; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Cal was preceded in death by his parents, Eckhardt and Dorathea; brothers, Paul, Fred and Henry and sister, Dorathea; and only daughter, Sheri (Danny) Goerke, Buffalo, Minnesota. Cal is the last of the Goettemans to have lived on the Homestead in Minden Township which had been occupied by Guerdtmans (earlier spelling) for about 125 years.

At his request, there will not be a memorial service. His remains will be cremated, with burial in the Benton County Cemetery, Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.
