Pioneer Dead

Mesa, Ariz., Aug 29--Collins R. Hakes, a pioneer settler of Mesa and one of the best known members of the Mormon colony in Arizona, died here today at the home of his life-long friend, Dial Morse. At the time of his death he was 79 years of age and had come west from the Illinois colony in 1846 with the Amasa Lyman company to Salt Lake City, from which point he immigrated to Arizona. Considerable part of his late life was spent in the Blue Water, N. Mexico district, where he was interested in oil properties. He was one time president of the Maricopa stake of the Mormon church.
