Joseph Salvador Munos
January 31, 1926 ~ June 26, 2015

Joseph Salvador Munos January 31, 1926 - June 26, 2015

Another of "The Greatest Generation" has passed away at age 89.
Joseph Salvador Munos, son of Ysabel and Victoria Montesino Munos, passed away early Friday morning June 26, 2015. Joseph was born on January 31, 1926 in Moline, Illinois. He was raised with seven brothers and sisters (Tom, Felix, Chiny, Sara, Mary, Johnny, and Bob) in Silvas, Illinois on Second St., which is now known as "Hero Street USA," as it had more young men and women volunteer for the US Armed Forces than any other street of comparable size in the United States. Eight of these boys from Hero Street, all Joseph's friends or family, were killed in the line of duty during WWII or Korea.

In 1944, during WII, at age 17 he voluntarily enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving in the Pacific, where he participated in airstrikes against the enemy on the island of Okinawa. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal after the war in 1946. He was called back to the Marine Corps in 1950 to fight in the Korean War. He would often advise family of the military discipline he had learned, stating regretfully that he had the opportunity during the war to go see his younger brother Johnny who had maneuvered with the US Army to a nearby hill on the Korean peninsula. He decided not to break discipline and stayed where he was at that time. He learned later that his brother Johnny was killed by enemy fire on that hill soon after. With the end of the Korean War, In December 1951, he was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant.

He settled with his wife and children in Yuma, Arizona where he worked and traveled as an employee for the U.S. Department of Defense. In 1968 he served a 9 month tour of duty in Vietnam as a civilian. He continued working for the Department of Defense until 1980 when he retired and moved to Phoenix, Arizona.

Joseph was a strong, quiet man who enjoyed working on homes and properties, playing pool, and reading. He also enjoyed participating in the lives of his children and their families. He often stated his greatest pride was that all of his eight children had good lives and were successful and accomplished in each of their chosen fields. Joseph S. Munos is survived by his eight children (Donna, John, Joanne, Linda, Kathy, Joseph, James, and Jeanne); 21 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and by his sisters Mary and Sara.

He regularly attended St. Agnes Church and was known in his community as a giving and caring neighbor, often providing support to assist others in need. Like so many of "The Greatest Generation," his service to this county required courage in the face of great personal risk and sacrifice which came with a lasting burden to carry. Generations of Americans have enjoyed the benefits of that sacrifice. Joseph will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Veterans and those wishing to honor his life and service are invited to join the family during the visitation, funeral and burial where he will receive military honors.

The Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for family only and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for the public at Queen of Heaven Catholic Mortuary, 1526 E. Baseline Rd., Mesa, AZ 85204. Joseph will be eulogized at the visitation commencing at 6:00 p.m.
