| Verdie (Standley) Price Born in Kiowa County, Kansas on Oct. 27, 1903. Departed on July 12, 2006 and resided in Cottonwood, Arizona. Verde Price, born October 27, 1903 in Kiowa County, Kansas, was the daughter of John and Lizzie Maggie (Johnston) Standley. She departed this life on July 12, 2006 in Cottonwood, Arizona, where she had resided for 16 years. She was born into a large family of which 10 children lived to adulthood. She is the last survivor of that family, and one of three sisters to live past their 100th birthday. She was proud of two thins in her lifetime. One claim to fame was belonging to a group known as "Soddies", that rare person born in a sod house. In her instance, it was on her folks' farm in southwestern Kansas. The other claim was the experience of being a real Harvey Girl; trained to serve as a waitress in Dodge City, Kansas, in one of the famous Harvey Houses established by Fred Harvey along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway line. For years, Verdie Price operated her own beauty salon in Long Beach, California. She was also a breeder of show dogs, besides being commissioned to paint portraits of show animals for their proud owners. As a textile artist, she excelled in knitting, crocheting, crewel embroidery, needlepoint, and making braided and hooked rugs. She handmade quilts and taught others, aw well as holding shows to exhibit quilts. Later in life, she became an excellent china painter. In 1941, she married Edgar Virgil Price, CPO USN, whose career spanned World War I, World War II, and the Korean Conflict. On December 7, 1941, he was on board the USS CALIFORNIA, in Pearl Harbor, T.H. when the Japanese attacked. He survived that, and was engaged at sea for the rest of the war and later in Korea. He drew shore duty and served in the Armed Forces Radio and Television offices in Hollywood, California, until he retired. Their retirement home was in Hemet, Calif. There, Virgil preceded her in death and is buried at the Riverside National Cemetery, in Calif. She will be interred with him in services which are to be private. Mrs. Price leaves to mourn her passing, among others, is her niece, Faye Johnson, who lives with her husband, Don Johnson, in Cottonwood, Arizona.
