Donald H. Topel was called home to be with his Lord Sunday, April 12, 2009. Don was born to Alfred and Mabel Topel Dec. 30, 1926, in Monroe County, Rochester, N.Y. He served our country in the US Navy during World War II. In 1960, with the lure of a warmer climate and a dream, Don moved his family to Phoenix. By 1965, Don was president of TEPS Filter-Fridge Corporation and was responsible for inventing the first under-sink water filtration system. Among the first owners of this system was Sen. Barry Goldwater. Don owned and operated Blue Ribbon Pest Control until his retirement. Those who knew Don will remember him for his kindness and dry sense of humor. The employees of the nearby grocery store in south Scottsdale called him the "candy man" because Don shopped there often and brought candy to all who helped him. Recently, Don had lived with his son Allen. The family is grateful Allen was able to provide and care for him during his last years. Don will be missed dearly by his family and friends. He is survived by the love of his life, Ellen Russel; his only wife Joan, who was the mother of his children which include four sons, Daniel, Allen, Jim and John; daughter Mary Beth; and stepsons Michael and David, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Mabel; brother Jacky and sister Corrine. Don was also preceded by his poodle Chris. "To those who know how much joy Chris brought to our Dad, this is not so odd to mention. We love you Daddy and will always miss you. We are grateful you are truly at peace now."
