Norma Clifta (Phillips) Bright Fairand, born to Carrie G. (Payne) and Mason E. Phillips Dec. 8, 1920, in Sagle, Idaho, went home to the Lord on April 17, 2016.

Norma grew up on her parents’ ranch near Pinedale, Wyo., and graduated from high school in Pinedale as valedictorian.

She served in the U.S. Army (WAAC) during World War II as a butcher and cook. At the time of her death she was reported to be the oldest WWII veteran in Lemhi County.

On Oct. 18, 1944, she married Harry Bright and they lived most of his life in Oregon. They had two children, Floyd and Carrie Katherine Bright. Upon his death, Norma became father as well as mother to her children, and raised them alone. She often lived near her parents, and that led her to Salmon, Idaho. She made a home for herself and her two children until Floyd graduated and joined the U.S. Navy, at which point she and Kathy moved to Wickenburg.

Norma was well known and respected in Salmon as she worked and worshiped God. She became an avid bowler, winning awards. She also loved to play baseball.

In Wickenburg, Norma was always known for her friendly and conscientious service to the public and to her employers. Along with her regular jobs, she hosted a perpetual yard sale in the front yard of her home, which fronted on the highway. She never knew a stranger and often housed, fed and cared for “down on their luck” people until they could move on.

In 1965, Norma married Robert Fairand and continued to live in Wickenburg. Even after their divorce some years later, they remained good friends. When Bob became ill, it was Norma who took him in and cared for him until his death. During those years, Norma took great pleasure in visiting the deserts and “rock-hounding” with her husband and friends.

In 2005, at age 85, Norma moved back to Salmon, enlisting Kathy and her children to move with her.

Norma loved to argue “and win.” She spent most of her life nurturing and protecting those she loved.

Bidding God’s love to their beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt are son, Floyd (Evelyn) Bright, Bremerton, Wash; daughter, Kathy Bennett and grandchildren, Spring Craft and David (Nate) Bennett, and great-grandson, Matthew Bennett of Salmon; sister, Virginia Chastain of Salmon; nephew David (Truly) Chastain and their children, Skyla and Jack, from Missouri; and grandchildren, Jeff (Anna) Bright and Terrell Bright. She had seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews spanning five generations.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Harry and Bob; sister, Frances Hansen; brothers, Floyd and Warren Phillips; grandson, Troy Bennett; great-grandson, Tyler Craft; a niece and a nephew.

Memorial services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, at 511 Lena St., Salmon, Idaho, on Friday, April 22, at 10 a.m. with Father Bob Perry conducting.

Inurnment will follow in the Salmon Cemetery with Military Honors by the American Legion Lloyd Shaw Post #67 and the Idaho Honor Guard.
