| Robert J. Scanlan Born in Lehigh, Montana on Jan. 30, 1920 Departed on Sep. 22, 2003 and resided in Cottonwood, AZ. Robert (Bob) Joseph Scanlan, 83, a reident of Cottonwood Village went to be with our Lord on September 22, 2003 after a long illness. Bob was the former president and publisher of the Star Printing Co., Inc. in Miles City, Montana and was a past president of the Montana Press Association, the Miles City Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and the Phoenix Press Club. He is also listed in the book Who's Who in America Politics, 1973-1974 edition. He also appeared on the TV program, Unsolved Mysteries. Bob was born in Lehigh, Montana and adopted by Joseph and Sarah Scanlan at the age of 2, when he moved to Miles City, Monatana. His father, Joe founded the Miles City Star in March 1916, and published it until his death in August 1939. Bob graduated from Custer County High School in 1938. He gave up his college plans when he learned that his father had terminal cancer. He enlisted in the Navy in 1941, and served on the USS Colorado, and the USS Cascade. In June of 1943, his ship was part of a fleet that left Pearl Harbor heading for the South and West Pacific. Liberty was unavailable until the war ended in 1945. After the war, Bob returned to Miles City, to wife Flo and 2 year old son Joe. He resumed his duties at the Daily Star. He spent 25 years in the newspaper business. In 1964, Bob sold his interest in the Star and moved his family to Scottsdale where he then served for 20 years as Administrative Assistant to former Congressman and House Minority Leader, John J. Rhoades of Arizona's District 1. Bob loved people, he gave freely of his time eneregy and cheering words. He could make life seem cheerful and worthwhile in spite of sdversity. Preceded in death by his wife Florence in February 2003. Bob is survived by his five children: Joe Scanlan of Hot Springs, S.D., Salli Starkey of Cottonwood, and Allan Scanlan of Santa Maria, Calif., John Kaites of Scottsdale, Mary Davis of Littleton, Colo., ten grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was a good husband and father, and will be greatly missed. There are no public services planned. Westcott Funeral Home was entrusted with these arrangements.
