Allen B. Kimball was born June 22, 1915, to Edwin Brigham and Alice Mary (Beers) Kimball in Westford, Vt.

His younger years were spent growing up on the family farm where products from their maple trees were a partial source of income. They also sold dozens of eggs (from their many chickens), which were sold to New York and Massachusetts.

Later, Allen worked for Vermont Hardware and W.E. Gregory Co. before being employed by IBM in Burlington, Vt. He retired from IBM in 1978.

During those years, he married Marion Towers. They had two children, Mary Alice and Robert Allen. They enjoyed traveling by RV to various parts of the U.S.A., covering all 50 states.

When he retired from IBM, they decided to try life in Florida, but afterwards moved to Tucson, Ariz., and discovered Prescott Valley awhile later. They moved here in 1987.

His wife Marion passed away in spring 1995 after various health problems. After hearing suggestions from an area pastor, he started attending luncheons at the Prescott Valley Senior Center. It is there that he met Betty Thompson through mutual friends in the fall of 1995. These friends were ballroom dancers and invited Betty and Al to join them. Al and Betty discovered they had mutual interest in music and musical programs at the college as well as travel. So in the spring of 1996, they decided to start a life together as a married couple. Al obtained a Winnebago motor home and off they went to California, Canada and Vermont, crossing through various other interesting states. They both had been to Hawaii in earlier years, so planned an inside passage cruise to Alaska. With the Alaska trip, Al reached his goal to be in all 50 states.

Allen and Betty both voluntarily gave up driving due to poor vision. With the aid of friends, neighbors, relatives and Senior Companion, they were able to be somewhat independent to do necessary errands.

Allen was a member of Ethan Allen Masonic Lodge #72 and a lifetime member of CASA. Allen is survived by his wife, Betty; a daughter, Mary A. Guertin (Joseph) of Prescott Valley; son Robert A. (Betty Jo) Kimball of North Carolina; a grandson, Robert (Tina); and two great-grandchildren of Vermont; and also several nieces and nephews. He also leaves two stepsons, Dennis and Gary Edwards of the Prescott Valley area.

His brother, Rufus (Constance); sisters Irene Lynde and Greta Wallace; and stepson Robert (Norma) preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Life will be at 3 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2009, at CASA.

Sunrise Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
