Mary A. (Rivera) Lewis

Mary A. Lewis passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 12, 2009. She was born in Fort Defiance, Ariz., on July 1, 1922, to Celso Rivera and Crescentia Gishebegay.

She attended St. Catherine's Indian School Santa Fe, N.M., and graduated from Cathedral High School in Gallup, N.M. She met the love of her life, Archie A. Lewis, in the spring of 1941. They were married Jan. 26, 1946, when he returned home from the war.

Mary and Archie lived in Prescott, Ariz., since 1954. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Archie; her parents; and two brothers, Anthony and Edward Rivera.

After the death of her husband in 2000, she came to live in Elko, Nev., with her daughter, Ann Adams.

Mary is survived by her four children, Anthony Lewis of Laughlin, Nev., Ann Adams of Elko, Nev., Geraldine (Mike) Doty of Phoenix, Ariz., and Donald (Cherri) Lewis of Flagstaff, Ariz.; sisters Louise (Alan) Reed and Lilly (Joe) Bernal of Gallup, N.M.; sister Celestine of Springfield, Ill.; and brothers Joseph River of Arkansas and Leonard (Cory) Rivera of Riverside, Calif. Mary had eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be said at 5 p.m. Friday, April 24, 2009, at the St. Joseph Church in Elko, Nev. Interment will be June 12, 2009, in Prescott, Ariz.

Mom was loved by everyone who knew her and will be missed by all.
