SIERRA, Carmen Diaz

Carmen Diaz Sierra, 93, of Safford, entered into rest Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Infinia Care Center in Safford. She was born May 9, 1915, in Morenci to Refugio Perez Diaz and Paula Esparza.

Carmen attended school in Morenci until the 10th grade. She worked for the Morenci Hospital as a housekeeper until her daughter was born. She then dedicated her life to raising her daughter and being a homemaker. She loved to sew, cook, garden and took pride in cake decorating, but her greatest joy was her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Marie Elizabeth (Jaime) Montoya of Safford; her sister, Paula Sierra of Clifton; goddaughter, Mary Mar-garet Sierra of Clifton; three grandchildren – Joseph Victor Montoya, Jonathon Brent Montoya and Timothy James Montoya; and two great-grandchildren – Isaac Madueno and Jaxon James Montoya.

A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at 10 am on Monday, March 16, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Safford. Visitation was also held at the church Sunday, March 15, and a rosary was recited at 7 pm. Interment was in the Safford City Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of McDougal-Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
