Harvey Samuel Emery Jr., 82, went to be with his Lord after an extended illness on Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, with his loving wife by his side.

He was born to Harvey and Mary Emery in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on Dec. 7, 1933. Harvey graduated from Allentown High School in 1951. He married the love of his life, Joanne, in August 1953. They moved to Prescott, Arizona, in October 1956.

Harvey started his career as a volunteer for the City of Prescott Fire Department in October 1956 and was hired as a full-time firefighter in May 1960; he retired as Assistant Chief in July 1980.

Harvey was so passionate about emergency services that he began a second career as Emergency Services Director for Yavapai County and the City of Prescott. He retired from that position in December 1997. He assisted with the organization of the Groom Creek, Arizona, Volunteer Fire Company; provided the first organized training program for the Mayer, Arizona, Volunteer Fire Department; assisted with the development of the Fire Science Degree program at Yavapai College; helped plan the layout for a 7-acre fire academy complex for the Prescott Fire Department; developed and instructed fire brigade training for the Veteran’s Administration Center in Prescott; and served on the Fire Science Advisory Board. He was proud to be the oldest living City of Prescott firefighter until his death.

He was an active member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and served as ambassador for Lutheran Hour Ministries. He and his wife touched many lives through Lutheran Marriage Encounter.

Harvey was preceded in death by his father, Harvey Samuel Emery; mother, Mary Elizabeth Emery; and brother, Edward Charles Emery.

Harvey is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Joanne; son, Charles (Stacey) Emery, Austintown, Ohio; daughter, Barbara (Blake) DeWitt, Prescott; and son, Stephen (Kirsten) Emery, Prescott; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother, Michael Orendock of Grantville, Pennsylvania; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 1202 Green Lane, Prescott. If desired, friends may make memorial contributions to the Good Samaritan Society Prescott Hospice, 1063 Ruth Street, Prescott, AZ 86301 or Lutheran Hour Ministries, 660 Mason Ridge Center Drive, St. Louis, MO 63141. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Allen Gardner, Dr. Harvey Thomas, and Good Samaritan Society Prescott Hospice.
