| Camp Verde Bugle, Camp Verde, Arizona Saturday, April 25, 2009 Henry L. Stevens, Jr. started his adventure on Aug 2, 1929, a gift to Doris Burnham Stevens and Henry L. Stevens, Sr., of Epsom, N.H. Born and raised on a farm, 'Sonny' worked the long and arduous hours required of the family business, developing the industrious work ethic that would be the hallmark of his life. While attending the University of New Hampshire, he pursued a degree in animal husbandry, ROTC, and the city girl who would become his wife in 1951, Elizabeth Stevens of Portsmouth, NH. Upon graduation, he entered the Air Force and spent the next 23 years serving his country, finally retiring from Norton AFB as a Lt. Colonel. Along the way, he collected a Master's degree from Purdue University and collaborated on a daughter, Cynthia. He and Liz started their second career by purchasing Value Center Furniture in Redlands, Ca., which they ran with much success until her passing in 1989. The business continued with the invaluable help of nephew Richard Scott until Hank retired in 1993. Hank started a new chapter in 1990 when he married Jean Anderson, finding a loving companion who enjoyed travel, gardening, reading and the Arizona red desert, where they settled in 1995. A non-stop putterer, he built fences, landscaped the yard, erected a shop, painted the house, and for quiet time, learned how to use a PC. He still had a full honey-do list when he left us April 21st. While his labors have ceased, his spirit is still evident in the blooms of the garden, the songs of the birds around the feeders and the rustle of the desert wind that he loved so much. There was a gathering of his family and friends on April 25 at the family home. Information provided by survivors. |
