MANTELLA, Mary P. Mary P. Mantella took her “first class flight to heaven” on April 24, 2009, at the tender of age of 88. She was born in Cortland, N.Y. to Michael and Mary Dudan. Mary moved to Mesa, Ariz. from Pompano Beach, Florida in August 2006 to be near her only child, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. What a wonderful, glorious two and a half years it was. Family gatherings at holidays, birthdays, special occasions and weddings, any excuses were OK. Son Michael’s daily morning visits required bringing her fresh coffee and a jelly donut. Her shopping outings with her son as the chauffer were “to just look” and even occasionally she bought something. She was a terrific mom, sister, wife, nurse, senior citizen, aunt, friend and grandma. She will be missed by all of us. Mary graduated from Highland Hospital School of Nursing, Rochester, N.Y. in 1942 as a registered nurse. She held various nursing positions in Rochester for the next five years. In 1947 she moved to Manchester, N.Y. with her husband, Pat, and only child, Michael. Her first full-time nursing position was with the Garlock Packing Co. in Palmyra, N.Y. as a factory nurse. After leaving Garlock, she was employed at the Clifton Springs, N.Y. hospital as a floor nurse, later as a charge nurse of various floors and of the operating room facility. After many successful years in Clifton Springs, Mary took a full-time position at Thompson Memorial Hospital in Canandaigua, N.Y. until her retirement in 1985. It culminated 43 years as a nurse, caregiver, friend to many patients, colleagues and staff members with whom she shared many good times and had the utmost respect for. Mary was an active member of St. Dominic’s parish in Shortsville, N.Y. for many years and of St. Bernadette’s parish in Pompano Beach, Fla., where she lived for 15 years. She was a member of various clubs in Shortsville and Florida and very active in her homeowners association in Florida, especially at Thursday night bingo, bake sales and those poolside parties. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Pat Petrone (42 years) and Carmen Mantella (14 years); her oldest sister, Irene Hessney of Manchester, N.Y.; and daughter-in-law, Janelle, of Fountain Hills. She is survived by her remaining sister, Anna Davis of Cortland, N.Y.; only child, Michael (Carrie) of Fountain Hills; grandchildren, Andy, Sonja (Todd) and Mathew of Scottsdale, Eric (Mayra) of Fountain Hills and Christie of Flagstaff; great-grandchildren, Caleb and Noah of Scottsdale; as well as many nieces and nephews, in-laws, friends and family in all parts of the U.S. and Australia. Mary’s family gratefully thanks the staff of Serenity Hospice and Courtyard Towers for the excellent care and tenderness she received. We especially thank Hospice nurses Jannine and Julie for all their cheerful visits/help, Chaplain Fred for his visits, talks and sharing of the word with mom and the entire caregiver staff at Courtyard Towers. A private memorial service will be held Friday, May 8, at Courtyard Towers in Mesa. Mary’s family suggests memorial gifts be given to Serenity Hospice and Palliative Care, 7227 N. 16th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85020, Courtyard Towers, 22 N. Robson, Mesa, AZ 85201, or to a charity of your choice in her name. Published in the Fountain Hills Times May 6, 2009. |
