Nathaniel “Nat” Melvin Edmands, Jr., 69, formerly of Saugus, Mass., Milton, N.H.; and Pahrump, Nev., passed at home on Nov. 12, 2016, following a lengthy respiratory illness. He was the beloved husband and 27-year companion of Maggie (Brown), and the son of the late Nathaniel M. Edmands, Sr. and Edith (Dunham, Edmands) Harmon. Nat was a humble, compassionate and highly intelligent man.

Born Jan. 4, 1947, in Lynn and raised in Saugus, Nat attended Essex Agricultural School and was later credited with a U.S. patent (#3,622,412) during a stint at W. R. Grace & Co. in Cambridge, Mass.

Among Nat’s passions was automobile racing. He grew up in the hot rod speed shops of Salem and Lynn and loved driving open-wheel, stock and modified cars on dirt, pavement and even ice. Nat’s abilities – renowned and trusted – as a gasoline and heavy diesel mechanic were the foundation of a lifelong career. He guaranteed his work and drew business from as far as 1,000 miles away. In later years Nat’s mechanic business went mobile, and he would drive great distances to service both loyal customers and stranded motorists in the sparse southwest.

Nat’s interests included science fiction and astronomy. He was a fervent competitive pistol shooter alongside his fellow hobbyist friends in northwestern Arizona. He loved the desert and its culture, living and hiking much of the last 25 years in the Sonoran desert and for a time in the Mojave.

Nat is survived by his wife Maggie of Yarnell; two sons, Nathaniel M. Edmands III and wife Marsha of Reno, Nev., and Christopher T. Edmands and wife Bethany of Woodfords, Calif; grandchildren, Honor and Sovereign Edmands and Madison Carden of Reno; step-daughter Shannon J. Ray and her husband Steve of Wickenburg; and grandchildren Sgt. John A. Tierney, US Army stationed in Germany, Suzanna M. Ray of Prescott, and Ashley N. and Alycia R. Ray of Wickenburg.

In accordance with Nat’s wishes, there will be no services. David’s Desert Chapel Funeral Home in Wickenburg has arranged his cremation.
