JOHNSON, Wendell Alfred

Wendell Alfred Johnson, 69, of Tucson, died November 21, 2003. He was born November 20, 1934, in Omaha, Nebraska. A graduate of North High School in Phoenix, he attended ASU, graduated from Phoenix College, earned a BS degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Arizona and an MS degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of Nevada at Reno. He was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1957. He began his professional career in the Electronics Engineering Department at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, California in 1963. He retired in 1993 and moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he loved exploring desert back roads and rock hounding. He was an avid reader and lifelong student of history. He enjoyed traveling, listening to music and playing with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Judith; and children, Bryon Morris (Robin), Brentwood, CA, Cathleen Tennyson (Michael) Livermore, CA, Janet Noguez (Doug) of Mesa, Az. Terrilynn Gilbert (Ron), and Kristin VanDusen of Livermore, CA.; his sisters, Joan Ticknor of Phoenix, AZ, and Jean Steele of Scottsdale, AZ; his brother, Robert Ticknor of Phoenix, AZ; his grandchildren: Matthew, Holli, Stephanie, Shawnell, Bethany, Victoria, Cierra, Kristianna, Catelyn, Kelsey, Jennifer, Hannah, Alexandria, Johnathan, Karina, and Kaylee; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Monday, December 1, 2003, at Oro Valley United Church, 1401 E. El Conquistador, Oro Valley, AZ. A Military Honors Ceremony was conducted at the V.A. National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ., on Tuesday, December 2, 2003. Donations in his name may be made to the University of Arizona, General Scholarship Fund, 1111 N. Cherry Ave., Tucson, AZ 85721. Published in the Arizona Republic on 11/27/2003.
