Helen Lockwood Van Zanen, 87, of Tempe, AZ., passed away on Feb. 17th, 2005. She was born May 26th, 1917 in Arcadia, Florida to David and Cornelia Lockwood of Plattekill, New York. Raised mainly in Stockbridge and Fall River, Massachusetts, she was a birthright member of the Society of Friends (Quakers). She graduated from Westtown School, in Westtown, Pennsylvania, in 1934, and from Oberlin College, in Oberlin, Ohio, in 1938. She met and married future aerospace and Apollo Program engineer Frederick Lambert Hulst Van Zanen, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1942. They raised 3 children, residing in Cleveland, Ohio from 1943 until moving to Scottsdale, AZ. in 1957.

Helen taught swimming from the early 1940's through the 1960's. She also managed a series of record stores in the Phoenix area from 1965 until retiring in 1993 at age 76. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of recorded music. She was a loving, giving mother, wife, friend, and co-worker, and was loved by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her 3 children, Judith Gorenc of Dewey, AZ., James Van Zanen of Ahwatukee, and Deborah Van Zanen of Tempe, 7 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. A private celebration of her life was held. Arrangements by Messinger Indian School Mortuary. Published in The Arizona Republic on 3/6/2005.
