DeVOE, William Betz

William Betz DeVoe, 85, died in the arms of loved ones at Boswell Hospital in the early morning of Saturday, April 24, 2004. Bill, an avid patriot and caring husband and father, was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois on August 7, 1918, and is survived by his loving wife Betty Jane from Canton, Ohio. By anyone who met him, he was known as a kind and generous man who almost never told a joke or uttered a pun he hadn't just thought up that moment. At the same time, he was known by those who loved him to be a man who earned respect through serious endeavors and considerable intellect. Bill served his country in World War II as a member of the Army Air Force's 147th AACS Squadron based on Tinian, the departure point of the Enola Gay, along with countless other missions to mainland Japan.

After the war, he returned home and pursued an interest in photography that had been instilled by his father, leading him to an almost 30 year career as a sales professional with the Agfa-Gevaert Company, a German photographic technology firm. Bill and Betty moved to Arizona in 1980 and lived in Sun City West until 2001 when they moved into the Carillons in Sun City, Arizona.

William was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Webster DeVoe and Margaretha Marie Betz DeVoe of Indiana and Pennsylvania respectively, and is survived by his cousin, Beverly Pierce of West Hartford, Connecticut. He is also survived by his daughters: Carol, Cathy, Chris and Claudia; and his son David, all of whom will miss him dearly. Also mourning his loss are fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
