Emma Elizabeth "Betty" Carpenter, 92, formerly of Casa Grande, died April 20, 2009 in Phoenix.

A celebration of her life was held Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Casa Grande. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery in Seymour, Indiana.

Ms. Carpenter was born in Indianapolis on March 17, 1917 to Curtis and Nellie Lee Gilbert. She was a graduate of the University of Indianapolis and Arizona State University. Her 40-plus-year career in teaching began in Indiana and continued in Arizona. Many students benefited from her devotion to education.

She moved to Phoenix in 1952 and in 1961 to Casa Grande, a town she loved. Her last five years in Phoenix allowed her and her family to enjoy get-togethers and sports events. She liked to play cards with the neighbors and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Phoenix Suns.

Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Jordan; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.
