| Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, May 06, 2009 Joan Pickard Horn, 76, passed away on Easter Sunday at Flagstaff, Ariz., Regional Medical Center of complications related to injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Her daughters, son and brother were at her bedside when she died. Joan was a registered nurse who was a true "Angel of Mercy" throughout her life, especially to the men who came under her care over the years at Veterans Administration Hospitals in New York. For many years, before retiring and moving to Prescott, Ariz., she worked primarily with Vietnam veterans whose service in that war had driven them to the depths of depression, drugs and alcohol. She was their nurse, counselor and friend at a time when their need was the greatest. Joan moved from her home in Fishkill, N.Y., to Prescott to be near her mother, who died in January of this year, and her children and grandchildren, who live and work in the area. She was a native of Syracuse, N.Y., having attended Valley High School, and Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing. She lived briefly in Santa Monica, Calif., and loved to tell the story of how she and her girlfriends had met Frank Sinatra on a trip to Las Vegas. She is remembered fondly by all as a lively person with an affinity for jazz music, a love of life, devotion to her pets and great pride and affection for her family. Joan is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Horn of Prescott, and Kelley Barreras (Stanley) of Winslow, Ariz.; a son, Robert (Ailyn) of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Donald (Jackie) of Syracuse, N.Y.; grandchildren Avery Snyder of Seattle, Wash., Keaton Snyder of San Francisco, Calif., and Rubie, Kassandra and Kyle Horn of San Jose, Calif. She was predeceased by her brother, James. A special tribute to her memory will be part of the Mother's Day celebration service 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Pilgrim's Rest Southern Baptist Church in Phoenix, Ariz.
