Prescott Evening Courier, Prescott, Arizona Tuesday, August 7, 1923, page 6, column 5 Death Changes Charge Against Jerome Mexican Deciding too late to allow the county physician, R. N. Looney, to remove his leg, Jose Contreras paid with his life for his procrastination, according to the announcement made late yesterday. Contreras' death made a murderer of Caterino Yerba, who still is at large. The shooting occurred in Jerome more than a week ago, when Yerba, alleged to have became incensed because Carlos Ponce had attacked his brother with a knife, went gunning for Ponce, opening fire upon him as he stood in the street of Mexican town in Jerome. Transcriber's note: Mr. Contreras is buried in an unmarked grave at the Citizens Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona. |
