Lloyd Lajoie Chambers

Lloyd Lajoie Chambers, a prominent Wisconsin Rapids lawyer until his retirement in 1990 & subsequent residency in Sun City, Arizona, died April 11, 2001 at Sun Health Hospice, Peoria, Arizona. He was the son of Lloyd Legrande Chambers & Alma Ruby Harrison Chambers.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, he graduated from North Division High School in Milwaukee, the University of Wisconsin, & the University of Wisconsin Law School, the latter with a Doctor of Laws degree in 1935. During his school years, he worked as a staff writer for the Milwaukee Sentinel from 1927 to 1935, & was an active member of Phi Alpha Delta & Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternities. Following graduation from law school, he served as City Attorney for Mauston, Wisconsin, & District Attorney Pro Tem for Juneau County, Wisconsin.

In 1950 he joined the Ashland Oil & Refining Company at Ashland, Kentucky, as House Counsel. From 1953 to 1990 Chambers practiced law in Wisconsin Rapids as a partner in the firm of Graves, Casey & Chambers, and co-founded the firm of Graves, Chambers & Nash. During his long professional career Chambers acted as co-trustee of Samoset Council, Boy Scouts of America, and as a member at various times of the Kiwanis Club, Elks Club, Riverview Hospital Board of Trustees, Wisconsin Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Congregational Church Men's Club, Up River Gun Club, Masonic Lodge, & Madison Zor Shriners. He acted as Chairman of the Wisconsin Rapids Fire & Police Commission for 14 years & served as President of the Wood County Bar Association.

Not content with an active professional career, Chambers developed and operated a world class Christmas tree farm under the name of Happy Holiday Tree Farm. The Wisconsin Christmas Tree Association voted him the grand champion award four times & he represented Wisconsin at the national tree conventions at Corvallis, Oregon and Amherst, Massachusetts.

Mr. Chambers is survived by two sons, Lloyd Lawrence and Daniel Thomas, & a daughter, Emeline Ruby Dale, grandchildren, Lloyd IV, Simeon, Samuel, Phoebe, Arden, Laura and John. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife of 49 years, Norma Smith Chambers & a grandson, Thomas. His subsequent marriage to the former Dorothy Duckartended in divorce. Mr. Chambers was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church & in later years of the United Church of Christ in Sun City, Arizona. Visitation will be held at the Menke Funeral Home in Sun City, Arizona, on April 17, 2001. There were no services.
