Alicia (Landeros) Hernandez

Posted 2009-05-13 by Arizona Newspapers
Alicia Landeros Hernandez, 82, of Las Cruces, NM, died at her home Sept. 17, 2001, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Dec. 24, 1918, in San Jose, California, to Jesus Landeros and Dolores Segovia Juarez.

The Landeros family moved to Superior and Alicia attended elementary and high school in the community.

After her marriage to Phillip Hernandez of Bakersfield, CA, the couple made their home at 550 Sonora Street for many years.

Phillip was a Magma Copper Company miner and Alicia was a jeweler until the mid-50s when the family moved to San Manuel. The Hernandez family later moved to Oracle and resided there permanently.

Alicia was often called to University Medical Center in Tucson to serve as an interpreter for Spanish-speaking patients and their families.

Following the death of her husband, Alicia lived in Oracle until nine years ago when she moved to Las Cruces to be with her son, Steve, and his wife, Darlene, and Alicia’s beloved grandson, Phillip.

In Las Cruces, Alicia was an active volunteer with Las Cruces public schools, in particular Doña Anna Elementary and Sierra Middle schools, where she was fondly called, "Nana."

Alicia is survived by two sons, Phillip of California, and Steven (Darlene) of Las Cruces; a grandson, Phillip of Las Cruces; a daughter, Shelye Landeros of New York; a sister, Margaret (Richard) Soto of California; nieces, Nicole Nater and Peggy Acedo; uncle, Jose "Pepe" Juarez of Superior; cousin, Elena Solis of Superior; and aunt, Nieves Apodaca of Hawaii.

At her request, cremation took place and no services were held.
