Ray Burgess

Ray Burgess, 54, passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at his home in Kearny. He was born Dec. 17, 1946, in Medford, Oregon.

He came to Kearny in 1974 from California. He went to work for the Town of Kearny as a mechanic and at the time of his death was the Public Works Manager, a position he had held for several years. He served the Town for a total of 25 years.

Before coming to Kearny, Burgess was in the U.S. Army Airborne for 12 years where he earned a purple heart and many other commendations during the Vietnam conflict.

He was named the 1989 Citizen of the Year by the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce, was a reserve police officer and worked as a firefighter behind the scenes. He was also a member of the Kearny Elks Lodge, was instrumental in creating the ATV trails surrounding Kearny and contributed many hours beyond what was necessary to help create the new Kearny Lake.

He also belonged to several hunting organizations and while in California was a member of the California Rebels, a biker club.

He was a real outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting, and had many other hobbies including rescuing and doctoring injured animals.

Survivors include his son, Kenny and daughter-in-law, Christine Burgess of Kearny; mother, Mamie Wishterman of Scottsdale; fiancée, Julie Nichols of Kearny and children, Tera Ramsey, Troy Nichols, Wyatt Nichols, Carrie Nichols, Jeremy Nichols and Reggie Nichols; and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in the Ray School District auditorium followed by a gathering of friends at the home.

Arrangements were handled by Griffith Mortuary.
