Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, AZ >>> Published on Monday, September 18, 2017 <<< >>> March 1, 1941-Sept. 9, 2017 <<< George Henry Stollwerck, Jr., 76, passed away peacefully Sept. 9 at Josephine Care Community in Stanwood, Washington. He was born in New Rochelle, New York to George and Lacey Stollwerck, the eldest of six children. George had been a resident of Skagit County, Washington on and off for many years, except when employment responsibilities required temporary relocations to California, including Newport Beach, Sacramento, and Los Angeles. Also Salt Lake City, Utah, St. Louis, Missouri and Tahullah, Louisiana. Due to health concerns, he moved back to Skagit County in 2010. George graduated from Burlington-Edison High School in 1959. Throughout his life, he pursued continuing education at colleges and universities. George held multiple certifications from a wide array of professional organizations, including being licensed by the FAA as a commercial pilot. He met his obligation in the service of his country, and held various command-level positions in public education, law enforcement, environmental protection and private industry. George moved to beautiful Lake Havasu City since his retirement in 1998 and made a radical career change, switching from the airlines to writing fiction and non-fiction books. At the time of his death, George had published eight books, including one with technical advice from Lt. Colonel Edward “Lobo” Wolf, a retired three-war USAF fighter pilot. This novel revealed little-known facts of how America achieved superiority in space during the Cold War, despite massive odds generated by the Russians and a delayed program start. George was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. George and Lily Lacey Stollwerck and youngest sister, Heidi Kay Hutchens. He is survived by brother Peter (Carol) Stollwerck and family of Mukilteo, Washington, Eric (Karla) Stollwerck and family of Anacortes, Washington, sister Gretchen (Randy) Merritt and family, of the Big Lake area of Mt. Vernon, Washington, and sister Michelle Robertson and family in Mt. Vernon, Washington. George’s family thanks the great staff at Josephine Care Community and Hospice of the Northwest. At George’s request, there is no public service. Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home and Memorial Park of Mt. Vernon, Washington. |
