Mike C. Martinez, 66 of Hayden, passed away at Carondelet Holy Family Hospice in Tucson March 1, 2002. He was born May 22, 1935, in Hayden and was raised in the Copper Basin area. He retired as an Asarco smelter supervisor after 33 years of employment and was a member of the Asarco 25-year Club. For over 28 years he served as a layperson at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hayden where he was a member of the parish. He was also active in the Cursillo Movement. He was well known for his artistic talent and painted numerous religious wall murals, and various religious canvas arts. He was a local historian and an avid metal detector and he amassed a huge collection of military and historic artifacts, many of which he displayed, sold and traded. Researching Civil War and World War II relics was his hobby. He also had the distinction of winning a new Chevy II car raffled by the Hayden-Winkelman merchants in 1967. He served with the U.S. Army Reserves and was an outdoorsman who hunted javelina, elk and deer. In 1970 he achieved a goal of killing a trophy deer. Mike will be greatly missed by his family, wife, Carmen; daughter, Teresita, grandson, Jude, and son-in-law, Michael. He will also be deeply missed by his companions, Pete, Joe, Charlie, George and Taz, his faithful pets. Other survivors include siblings, Christina (George) Armenta of Kearny, Susie (Alfredo) Aguirre of Dudleyville, Alice Cox of Tucson, Delores (David) M. Martinez of Phoenix, Concepcion (Gus) Ortiz of Phoenix, Manuel (Carla) Martinez of Kearny, Frank (Olivia) Martinez of Glendale, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Pius M. Olmos; sisters, Candie, Rita and Victoria; brother, Norberto; parents, Manuel and Anita Corona Martinez; and niece Christina M. Valdez Miranda. Rosary and visitation was held Wednesday, March 6, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hayden. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Fr. Dale Branson Thursday, March 7. Serving as co-celebrants were past ministers to the St. Joseph’s Parish, Fr. Kevin Clinch and Fr. Larry Kasper. Interment was at Mountain View Cemetery in Hayden. His spirit never wavered and Mike leaves behind cherished memories of love, laughter, stories and advice. He will forever remain in the hearts and thoughts of his loved ones. As we live, he too lives within us. Donations can be made in his memory to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Funeral arrangements were handled by Martinez Funeral Chapels of Tucson. 03/26/2002.
