| Phyllis Joan Mattson, 71, of Safford passed away at her home April 28, 2009. Phyllis was born Nov. 16, 1937, and raised in Ontonagon, Mich., to Victor and Mary Kangas. She married William Arthur Mattson in 1966. In the summer of 1976, they took a vacation to Safford to visit relatives. A year later, they moved there. She loved gardening, sewing, playing the piano at church, visiting with family and friends, volunteering at the library and the Angel Closet, and serving the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Mary; her son, Dean Francis; her brother, Edwin Kangas; and her husband, Bill Mattson. She is survived by her son, John Francis III of Kapolei, Hawaii; her daughter, Karen (Chris) Angle of Safford; and her sister, Mary Jo (Ronald) Johnson of Nevada; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were May 6 with a dinner following. Services will be at the Desert Springs Community Church, 425 E. Fourth St., Safford.
