Posted 2009-05-17 by Superior Sun News
Mundo Alvarado, 34, of Kearny, passed away April 8, 2002, in Scottsdale, Arizona, after a long and courageous battle with an unusual condition called Marfan Syndrome.

He was born Jan. 10, 1968, in Kearny, the son of Edmund and Teresa Alvarado. At age two, an optometrist diagnosed Mundo with Marfan Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that affects many organ systems, including the skeleton, lungs, eyes, heart and blood vessels.

The most serious problem associated with Marfan Syndrome is its effect on the aorta, the main artery carrying blood away from the heart. In affected people, the aorta is prone to progressive enlargement and tears can result in the aortic wall, requiring surgical repair.

Through adolescence, Mundo experienced several eye surgeries due to the Marfan’s disorder. The Alvarados relocated to Baltimore, Maryland where they became more familiar with Marfan Syndrome through John Hopkins Hospital.

Mundo attended high school in Salt Lake City, Utah. In his junior year of high school, he earned $1200 to tour Europe for 28 days with the high school Art Club. The family relocated back to Kearny where Mundo graduated from Ray High School his senior year. At age 18, two days after his high school graduation, he flew back to Baltimore for a routine checkup and ended up scheduling his first heart surgery. All in all, he would experience about ten major surgeries consisting of the eyes, ear, and heart.

He never let his medical condition prevent him from leading a full life. He graduated from Central Arizona College and attended the University of Arizona. His goal was to major in finance, go to law school, and become a corporate attorney. He did experience love and learned to drive.

Some of Mundo’s favorite things were Skittles, Sweethearts, M&Ms, Michael Jordan, the young Elvis Presley movies, the New York Yankees, car shows, and cruising the streets of Kearny and Hayden.

He was a member of the National Marfan Foundation (1-800-862-7326). Donations can be sent in Memory of Edmundo "Mundo" Alvarado to: National Marfan Foundation, 382 Main Street, Port Washington, NY 11050.

Mundo leaves behind his parents, "Kito" and "Teddy" of Kearny; sister, Mona Lisa (David) Speers of Casa Grande; brother, Chris of Chandler; grandparents, Emilio and Eliza Villa of Superior; aunts, Velia Alvarado of Kearny and Olga (Alex) Villalobos of Mesa; and uncle, Emilio (May) Villa of San Diego.

He will always be known as Uncle "Moo" by his seven nephews, Brian, Christopher, Eric, Joshua, Christopher, Isiah and Theo and his two nieces, Hanna and Kristin. He will be greatly missed by his four godchildren and by the many, many friends he made throughout his life.

Visitation and Rosary were held Thursday, April 11, at Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Kearny with Father William Taft officiating. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Father Dale Branson Friday, April 12, also at Infant Jesus of Prague.

Mundo was laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery in Superior with Deacon Yanez officiating.
