James R., III Gallagher

James R. Gallagher III, 53, passed away April 10, 2002, in La Jolla, California, of cancer.

Born Aug. 22, 1948, in Chicago, he lived in Escondido, California, for 22 years. He was a meat cutter for 22 years with the UFCW Union Local 135.

He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a CCD teacher at St. Gabriel’s Church in Poway, California.

He was an avid supporter of the Escondido Girls Softball League and a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in La Jolla.

He was involved in the Literacy 2000 Reading Program at the Escondido Library. He enjoyed horses, computers, reading and watching drum corps competitions.

Mr. Gallagher was preceded in death by his sister, Susie, in 1952, and niece, Kathy, in 1972.

He is survived by his wife, Connie of San Marcos, California; mother Patricia Gallagher of Superior; father, James Gallagher Jr. of Superior; son, David Gallagher of San Marcos; daughter, Lena Gallagher or San Marcos; brothers, Tyler Gallagher of Superior, Danny Ortiz of Florida, and twin brother, Patrick Gallagher of Superior; sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Anne and Fred McVean of Vail, Arizona, and Mary Murry of Phoenix; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass was celebrated on Friday, April 19, at All Hallows Catholic Church in La Jolla. Interment was at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego on Monday, April 22.

The family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, 265 Camino Del Rio North, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92108 or the Disable American Veterans, 1488 Market Street, San Diego, CA 92101.

North County Cremation Service handled the arrangements.
