Frank Corona

Frank Corona, 69, passed away May 4, 2009, in his home in Solomon following an extended hospital stay.

Frank was born Jan. 28, 1940, in Mesilla, N.M., to Amelia Valencia and Isidro Molina Corona. He spent much of his young life moving from state to state as a migrant worker with his father, brothers and sister.

He attended grammar schools in Tucson and Eloy and eventually moved to Clifton, where he worked at the Clifton Cleaners, the theater and J.C. Penney. He graduated from Morenci High School in 1958. He then moved to Whittier, Calif., where he continued his employment at J.C. Penney.

He met his wife, Leanor, in August 1962 while in attendance at a wedding both were in — in Solomon. After a long-distance romance over the phone, they were married Feb. 16, 1963.

In 1971, Frank opened a business, Frank’s Mexicatessen, in Whittier. He operated the business until 1976, when he moved his family to Solomon. It was then he began his 22-year career as a UPS driver.

Frank retired in 1997. Since his retirement, Frank spent his time fishing, working on his arts and crafts, gardening, going to the casino, visiting friends and family and volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul.

Most of all, he love spending time with his wife and grandchildren. They were his life.

Frank is survived by his wife, Leanor; three children, Jackie (Dimas) Franco of Tucson, Frank (Michelle) Corona of Solomon and Chris Corona of Solomon; 14 grandchildren; brothers, Joe Corona of Carlsbad, Calif., Felipe Flores and Gilbert Flores of Las Cruces, N.M.; and sisters, Phyllis Ortega of Indio, Calif., Merlinda Lingford of Calimesa, Calif., and Zeniada Flores of Las Cruces, N.M. He is preceded in death by his parents, Amelia Valencia Flores and Isidro Molina Corona; his brother, Joe Valencia; and his sister, Romelia Solomon.

A rosary was recited May 8 at St. Rose of Lima, with a funeral Mass on May 9. Interment was at the Safford Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of McDougal’s Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
