Otto (Zeke) Kliewer, 60, a representative of the Equitable Life Insurance Co. in Atchison 23 years and a prominent civic leader, died at 12:45 o'clock this morning at the Atchison Hospital. He was stricken with a heart attack at 10:15 o'clock last night at his home, 416 Riley, and was taken to the hospital a short time later where he was placed in an oxygen tent.

Last evening Mr Kliewer and his wife, Marjory, of The Globe's advertising department, had Mr and Mrs Claude Wolfe as dinner guests at their home. After dinner the foursome played schaafskopf until 10 o'clock when the Wolfe's went home.

Mr Kliewer was preparing to retire and Mrs Kliewer was working in the kitchen when he was suddenly stricken.

Sunday Mr Kliewer returned from a three-day fishing trip to a lake in Canada with Cloud Cray, Sr, F P Gehring and Bob Snowden. He had a grand time on the trip and returned home feeling fine.

Arrangements for the funeral services are pending word from Mr and Mrs Kliewer's son, Max E Kliewer, resident petroleum engineer for The Gulf Oil Co. at Agha Jari, Iran.

The casket is at the Sawin & Dyer Mortuary.

Mr Kliewer was formerly grand exalted ruler of the Elks lodge in Kansas. He was a former chairman of the United Fund Drive in Atchison and was a member of the United Fund board. For years he was on the Boy Scouts board here. He was active in all Chamber of Commerce affairs and had served on the board of directors.

One of Mr Kliewer's chief interests was his church. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church and had served the church as an elder, deacon and trustee.

For years he had given his support and time to the sports programs of Atchison High School and St Benedict's college. When there was a scarcity of coaches during World War II he assisted Leo Denny in coaching the Atchison High School football team on a volunteer basis.
Known to all his friends as Zeke, Mr Kliewer was universally well liked.

He had a deep and genuine spiritual character and in times of stress or tension was the sympathetic and understanding friend. He had a great pride in exactness and carefulness and was forthright in all matters; in his views he was frank, but kindly, and ready to consider the other man's viewpoint. He always stood firm for what he believed to be right and fair.

Mr Kliewer was an outstanding athlete as a youth. He was born and reared in Newton, the home of championship basketball, and was an All- State basketball player in high school. He was also an All-State player in college--two years at Fairmount College, Wichita, and two years at Bethel college in Newton.

A son of Paul and Paula Nickel Kliewer, natives of Germany, Otto Kliewer was born March 27, 1898. His father was a clothing merchant in Newton.

After serving in the navy in World War I, Otto Kliewer was office manager of the Kansas Power and Light Co. in Newton for a year. Then he entered college. After receiving his degree he taught and coached all sports at Wellington High School three years. Then he moved back to Newton and operated a grocery store two years, selling out late in 1929. After this he took an eight-month trip around the world as traveling companion and tutor of a student.

He went with the AQUW in Newton and came here as district manager for the organization 24 years ago. A year later he became associated with Equitable. Mr Kliewer was an outstanding success in the insurance business.

Aug 26, 1924 he married Miss Marjory McKee, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E. J. McKee of Halstead, at the Presbyterian church in Halstead. The bride was a public school music supervisor in Halstead.
